Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa is Miss Universe 2017!

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa lived up to her pre-pageant hype and captured the Rainbow Nation’s first Miss Universe title in 39 years. The 22-year-old business graduate edged out 91 other beauties in the 66th edition of the pageant held in AXIS Theatre, Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is now her country’s second Miss Universe titleholder after Margaret Gardiner in 1978.

The introduction of the new regional selection process was definitely met with mixed reactions. For one, why crowd Asia, Africa, and Oceania in one group?! But choices had to be made and sentimental favorites had to be sacrificed.

So, after much discussion, we’ve decided to root for the following:

Has it really been almost a year?

It’s been 10 months since we experienced Miss Universe in Manila first hand – more specifically, had the pleasure of scoring a gig with one of its local broadcasters. Truth be told, it’s actually why we’re starting Pageant Geeks. 

Now, this forthcoming pageant was actually almost déjà vu.  It can be recalled that the Philippines was initially offered to serve as host country for the second year in a row, following the amazing local reception and reportedly nearly overshadowing the 2017 Super Bowl.
